How much will solar screens save on my electric bill?
There is no way for anyone to give you an accurate figure because there are too many variables involved: How many windows do you have? Which way do they face? How big are they? Others state that solar screens will save you 25% off your electric bill, insulation will save you 25%, radiant barrier will save you 30%, those door seals that they advertise on television will save you 25%. Right there, you have a 105% savings. Don't expect your electric company to start paying you. Solar screens stop the sun's heat and radiation from touching you windows. This will prevent your air conditioning from continuously cycling and will save you money on your electric bill.
Will my solar screens pay for themselves?
Yes, since solar screens save energy, they normally will pay for themselves within a short period of time by reducing your energy bills. Also they will help your air conditioner last longer and need fewer repairs due to the reduction of its normal workload.
Will solar screens block my view?
Solar screen will still allow full visibility; only you will be looking through a material so it is almost like looking through a regular screen, only a little darker.
Will people be able to see into my home?
Solar screens offer complete daytime privacy. You are able to open your blinds and windows and no one will be able to see into your home. Where ever the light source is strongest, the other side of the screen becomes opaque. At night if you have lights on in your home and no outside light on, people will be able to see in.
Are all solar screens the same?
Yes and No. At the basic level, all solar screens consist of solar fabric stretched over an aluminum frame. What most companies offer is a thin frame, assembled with plastic corners and then it is installed by screwing the solar screen into your window frame. This also voids the manufacturer's window warrantee on a new home.
What makes StarShades different?
StarShades come in three different styles. When it comes to windows, one size does not fit all. StarShades have no plastic in their construction. Every corner is made of heavy duty solid aluminum. StarShade frames are much thicker than our competitor's frame. Because the frame is deeper, we can use a much thicker stronger spline to secure the fabric to the frame. StarShades are installed using matching metal wing clips that make it easy to remove and replace.
What windows or doors on my home should I cover with StarShades? For maximum energy efficiency, solar screens should be installed on all windows and doors. If you do not have the budget to do the complete home, cover the most problem areas with StarShades. Later you can complete your home.
Should I take my solar screens off in winter?
No. There are less daytime hours in the winter. Generally, it is more overcast, limiting your chances of passive solar heating. Solar screens also create somewhat of a barrier, keeping the cold winter winds off your glass, similar to a storm window, therefore, keeping the temperature of the glass warmer. The warmer the glass, the less convection heat you need to pay to pump through your home will be attracted to the glass areas, conserving energy
Are StarShade solar screens easily removed and how are they installed?
Yes, all of our screens are installed with a metal wing nut that matches the frame color. Simply give a turn or two to the phillips-head screwdriver and turn the wing nut. It is as simple as that.
Will I still be able to open my windows for airflow?
Yes, solar screens installed properly will not inhibit the operation of your window. However, some airflow will be restricted due to the thickness of the material.
Will solar screens reduce fading?
Yes, StarShades will prevent your curtains, carpets and furniture from fading or discoloring.
How long will my solar screens last?
StarShade solar screens are warranted for as long as you live in your home. However, 20-30 years is a realistic life expectancy.
Should I use the 80% or the 90% screening?
If you want more light, better airflow and visibility, you should go with 80%. If you want more glare reduction and energy efficiency you should go with the 90%. It is also possible to put 90% on the real problem areas and 80% on less problem areas and aesthetically will not look different on the exterior.
